Dementia care services 'need to expand'

September 20, 2013

The world faces a major challenge to meet the needs of a soaring population of Alzheimers sufferers in the next few decades, a report has warned.

There is likely to be a worldwide shortage of care for Alzheimers sufferers in countries across the world in the coming decades, according to a new report from Alzheimer's Disease International.

Journey of Caring: An analysis of long-term care for dementia has predicted the number of older people with care needs will nearly treble from the 2010 total of 101 million to 277 million in 2050.

It concludes the current system of informal care will need more support and that means extra funding for a problem that currently costs £395 billion a year to deal with, around one per cent of global GDP.

Chief medical officer at Bupa Dr Paul Zollinger-Read said: “An ageing population around the world means that improving dementia care and support is one of our generation’s greatest healthcare challenges.”

Unhealthy diets may play a part in increasing the tally of dementia sufferers in the years ahead.

A recent study by in the US by the University of Washington and Group Health Research Institute found indications that those with higher levels of blood sugar may be more prone to dementia, even if they are not diabetic.
